The North Carolina Chapter of the Fulbright Association has scheduled a tour of a special exhibit at the N.C. Museum of Art, 2110 Blue Ridge Rd., Raleigh, for Saturday, July 29, 2023. The tour will begin at 11:00 am. A luncheon inside the Museum will follow the tour at 12:15. The FBA will subsize the cost of the exhibit and luncheon. You can select off the menu for your meal. Summer menu has not yet been released, but there will be a variety of dishes. See attached for registering and payment methods, including a QR code for electronic payment.
Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design.
East Building, Meymandi Exhibition Gallery (Older building) Creating pieces for films such as Black Panther, Malcom X, Selma, and Do the Right Thing, Academy Award winner Ruth Carter has designed costumes for legends like Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, Chadwick Boseman, Eddie Murphy, Angela Bassett, and Forest Whitaker. Her vibrancy and attention to detail in costuming is integral to translating stories of race, politics, and culture to the big screen. Her art adds dimensionality, flair, and culture to the characters she envisions, giving power to the incredible actors who wear her designs. From humble roots in Massachusetts, Carter has helped style the Afrofuturism movement for almost 40 years. In this exhibition the NCMA displays more than 60 of Carter’s original garments while also showcasing her immersive process, historical research, and attention to detail that imbues every project she brings to life.
Prices for exhibit:
$10 Adults who are members of the FBA (the usual fee is $20)
$7 Seniors and Military who are members of the FBA (the usual fee is $17)
Free for ages 21 and under, college students, and members of the NC Museum of Art
Prices for the luncheon: (You will select from the menu while at the restaurant.)
$12 for members of the FBA and current Fulbright students/scholars (the usual price is $22 plus tax and tip)
$15 for guests
We must have your reservation and payment by Wednesday, July 26th, 5:00 pm. Make out the check to the NC FBA. Or pay by Venmo (@sprakal), use link below. Although we will maintain a waiting list in case of cancellations, after our deadline it may not be possible to reserve additional spaces.
