Film Summary: This impactful debut documentary from director and producer Arwa Damon chronicles the journey of four young individuals, all survivors of the conflicts in Ukraine, Syria, and Afghanistan, as they embark on a week-long exhilarating trek to conquer Mt. Kilimanjaro. United by their experiences and driven by a desire to reclaim their agency, as well as for hope and healing, they share their stories, shedding light on what it means to create a new life beyond the shadows of war. The film documents their stories of courage and resilience, as well as the physical and psychological challenges they face as they push themselves to new limits to scale Africa’s tallest peak.
Arwa Damon is a multi-award-winning and Emmy Award-winning former Senior International Correspondent for CNN, best known for her ability to draw out nuanced human stories amidst war and other crises. Arwa has received extensive recognition for her work including TV and News Emmys, Peabodys, the Investigative Reporters and Editors award, and the International Women’s Media Foundation “Courage in Journalism” award. Among her numerous awards is an Emmy for the documentary “Return to Mosul” and she has reported from throughout the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and Africa.
