Greetings.

The Fulbright Ireland Interest Group Board would like to invite you to a celebration of Irish female musicians in recognition of International Women’s Day, focusing on the music of Sinéad O’Connor. The event will be held on March 7, 2024 at 12:00pm EST.   The host for this event will be Aileen Dillane, an Associate Professor of Music at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick.  She received her PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Chicago where she was a Fulbright Scholar and Century Fellow. Aileen has published widely in the area of Irish and popular musics, including Songs of Social Protest: International Perspectives (Rowman & Littlefield 2018), along with books on Morrissey, David Bowie, and Joy Division. She also recently concluded an EU-funded project on music festivals, public spaces, and cultural diversity. Aileen co-directs the Centre for the Study of Popular Music and Popular Culture at UL and is co-editor of two book series with Rowman and Littlefield, entitled Popular Musics Matter and Discourse, Power, and Society. Aileen is currently working on a monograph, Irish American Musical Imaginaries, based on over twenty years of fieldwork in Chicago and Ireland that examines migrant history, identity, cultural intimacy, and racial politics through the lens of music. Aileen frequently collaborates with the O’Brien Collection of Irish Art in Chicago and with the performing artists associated with amplifying that collection through music and poetry.  She is also Board Member of the Ward Irish Music Archives in Milwaukee. Aileen plays flute, piano, and bouzouki, is a member of the Templeglantine Ceili Band, and has been know to sing when asked.  Aileen will do a brief presentation about Sinéad O’Connor followed by a discussion about her and her music. She suggests that participants read her chapter about Sinéad beforehand, to learn about Sinéad’s background and her music.
