What: The Amana Colonies, Iowa’s Unique Communal Society
When: Saturday, October 19, 2024, 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Where: Amana Colonies, Iowa
The Amana Colonies represent a unique Iowa experiment in establishing a communal society of believers who sought religious freedom in America and who originally shunned private property but later chose not to reject the progress made by a modern capitalistic society. The Amana people who emigrated from Germany were and are totally distinct from the Amish and Mennonites of America. The Amana Colonies were listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1965.
Plan on attending to do all of the following:
· Tour Amana’s History Museum and hear from a museum interpreter of the 300-year history of the Amana people, with an emphasis on the Amana Colonies’ communal period in Iowa from 1855 until 1932.
· Eat a nutritious lunch of “Amana-CANA” cuisine in an historic Amana building and learn from an academic historian about the Amana Colonies’ place in Iowa and world history.
· Visit Three Historic Sites associated with the Museum:
v The Communal Kitchen in the village of Middle Amana, the only intact communal kitchen in the Amana Colonies as described by a museum host.
v The Church of the Community of True Inspiration in the village of Homestead. Learn from a museum guide about the inspirationists, both men and women, who were specially endowed as instruments of God.
v The General Store located in the village of High Amana in a building that remains virtually unchanged from 1857.
v Learn more about the history of the Amana Colonies at the sites from other academic historians who have studied the communal society.
· Visit the Amana Society’s stores which include the Amana Woolen Mill, the Amana Meat Shop, the Amana General Store, and the Amana Furniture and Clock Shop.
Capacity at the event may be limited to 40 attendees, so please respond to the official invitation as soon as you are able.
