Robert N Schock

Robert (Bob) Schock is Senior Advisor and former Director of Studies for the World Energy Council. He was a Coordinating Lead Author (Energy Sources) for the 4th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He was a Lead Author on the 2012 Global Energy Assessment. He is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Global Security Research. From 1968-2002, in various capacities up to Associate Director, he was involved in experimental geophysics research and was responsible for programs at the University of California’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in hydrogen fuels, geothermal energy, coal gasification, oil shale retorting, magnetic fusion, environmental restoration and waste management, as well as energy policy analysis.

He was a delegate to the US – Russian bi-lateral negotiations on nuclear nonproliferation (1999-2000), worked on verification of the Agreed Framework with N. Korea (2003), has served on the editorial boards of five scientific journals and on national scientific panels for the U.S. National Research Council, the Department of Energy (U.S.), and the National Science Foundation. He was a Senior Fulbright Fellow at the Universität Bonn, Germany (1973) and a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University (1980). He is an author on over 150 scientific and technical papers and 2 patent disclosures. He has served on the advisory boards of the Gas Technology Institute, the California Energy Institute and the Institute for Transportation Studies, and has testified before the U.S. Congress on pending legislation. He is now a Co-chair of the Energy Permanent Monitoring Panel of the World Federation of Scientists, President of the N. California Fulbright Alumni Association and the owner of Pressure Systems Research, manufacturer of specialized high pressure and temperature research equipment.

He holds a BSc degree in geology from Colorado College, an MSc degree in geochemistry and a PhD in geophysics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was a Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of Chicago from 1966-68. He was awarded a DSc (honoris causa) from Colorado College in 2014.

Dr. Schock is married to Susan E. Benton and they have three daughters and four grandsons. He is active in sailboat racing and is a California certified wine judge.
