Q: Tell us about your Fulbright experience. Where did you go? When? What did you do?
From September 2024 through June 2025, I served as a bilingual English Teaching Assistant in Tena, Ecuador at Universidad Regional Amazónica Ikiam – in the Amazon Rainforest! Collaborating with the Centro de Idiomas, I taught my own Level 1 English class, assisted in various Level 1 – 6 English classes, and organized a weekly English Club available to all university students and staff. Outside of work, I engaged in Level A1 – A3 in-person Kichwa language classes through “Kichwa Samay”, which I have continued online upon my return to the United States. Additionally, I enjoyed helping with the English translation of several Ikiam research papers, and participating in local cultural events and athletic activities.
Q: How has your Fulbright experience shaped your life and career? What skills, perspectives, or opportunities came from your exchange that still influence you today personally or professionally?
My Fulbright experience in Ecuador was truly unforgettable and impactful, both personally and professionally. Living in another country and natural environment – fully communicating in my second language – helped build my creative problem-solving skills, adaptability, and resilience in the face of unprecedented challenges. As my first teaching experience in a classroom setting, I learned the importance of flexibility, teamwork, cultural humility, and self-advocacy in the workplace while navigating this new space. I am deeply grateful that I had this opportunity to teach, learn, grow, and live alongside such compassionate, diverse individuals: They showed me the intangible value of investing in community, cherishing the holistic enrichment of conversation, and appreciating the nature around you – which drives a purposeful, balanced life. I will carry these key perspectives, connections, and memories with me as I move forward, blending my passions for language, culture, education, and adventure into a meaningful career.
Q: What does being part of the Fulbright alumni network mean to you?
Being a part of the Fulbright Alumni network is a privilege and an honor. I am eager to continue to cultivate new relationships with these like-minded, passionate, curious, global citizens, who dedicate themselves to fostering intercultural exchange and spearheading positive change around the world.
Q: Is there someone you would like to recognize who made your Fulbright experience especially meaningful or relevant? This could be a mentor, colleague, host, or community member who left a lasting impression.
I would like to recognize my Ikiam Centro de Idiomas coworkers and students, my Kichwa professor and class, and my Tena community for welcoming me to Ecuador with open arms and giving me a profoundly meaningful experience abroad. Thank you for sharing your culture, generosity, knowledge, support, friendship, and beautiful country with me.
