A Peruvian’s Journey of Growth and Discovery – Johann Cardenas – Peru 2021

In 2021, I received the Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship from the Fulbright Peru Commission. This prestigious award brought me from my home country, Peru, to the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, marking the beginning of a transformative journey.

My arrival at Illinois was both exciting and daunting. However, the welcoming community of the Fulbright Student Association quickly made me feel at home. My very first friends were also fellow Fulbright grantees, each with unique backgrounds and experiences, yet all united by a shared commitment to excellence and cultural exchange. I’m extremely glad these connections laid the foundation for a robust network that would become essential throughout my stay overseas. The support I received from my advisor was also instrumental in my success. His experience with former Fulbright grantees helped me navigate through my own challenges, fears, and accomplish my academic goals.

I proudly completed my master’s degree in civil engineering in 2023. But my journey didn’t end there. Inspired by the endless possibilities that Fulbright had unveiled, I decided to embark on a PhD adventure at the same university. The transition from a master’s program to a PhD was extremely seamless, mainly thanks to the supportive network I had built, and the unparalleled support I received from the program. The Fulbright program not only facilitated my academic growth but also enriched my personal life. It provided me with a global perspective, fostering a deeper understanding of different cultures and ways of thinking. This experience has been key in shaping my approach to research and collaboration, emphasizing the importance of diversity and inclusivity. On the other hand, traveling around the United States, from the quite neighborhoods of Urbana-Champaign to the bustling streets of San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, San Diego, New York City, Atlantic City, to the serene landscapes of beautiful national parks such as Yosemite, has broadened my horizons and deepened my appreciation for diverse environments. Moreover, the opportunity to travel overseas (Canada) to present my research has been a highlight, allowing me to share my work on international platforms and engage with leading experts in my field. These travels and connections have not only enhanced my academic pursuits but have also fostered meaningful relationships and unforgettable experiences, making my time as a Fulbright scholar truly transformative.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of being a Fulbrighter is the immense sense of pride and accomplishment it brings. Introducing myself as a Fulbright alumnus is a constant reminder of the incredible opportunities and responsibilities that come with this title. It symbolizes a commitment to fostering mutual understanding and contributing positively to society. I actively share my personal story hoping that it could help encourage others to also pursue their academic dreams.  I am immensely grateful and proud to be part of the Fulbright community. Recently, the Fulbright Peru Commision organized an alumnus meeting in New York, where I had the chance to meet again and get to know former and current grantees, and I will try my best to be there every year of my stay here.

From Peru to the US, and beyond, the Fulbright program has opened doors and created opportunities that I never imagined possible.
