My Fulbright was in Zimbabwe in 1994 where I taught Constitutional Law among other subjects at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare. I also assisted the court with research as they wrote several landmark human rights cases. The Zimbabwean Supreme Court was only 14 years old. I have attached two photos- the top photo shows me with Justice Ahmed Ebrahim on my left and Chief Justice Anthony Gubbay on my right; the other one shows the Chief Justice and me with Allegheny County President Judge Robert Dauer when the Chief Justice visited my husband and I in Pennsylvania.

At that time, I was the only sitting judge who served as a Fulbright Scholar. I don’t know if that is still true. Chief Justice Gubbay resigned from the court in 2001 under pressure from then Prime Minister Robert Mugabe because the court had made human rights decisions with which Mugabe disagreed. The Chief Justice and I forged a friendship that still endures twenty-seven years after we first met. He and his wife Susan, who currently reside on Vancouver Island, attended our 50th wedding anniversary celebration a few years ago.
