An American in a Christmas Market – Kaitlin Trokan – Slovakia 2018

Preparing Pancakes

At my host school, Gymnázium Sv. Edity Steinovej, we had our own Christmas market with booths from many different countries. My students and I together came up with a list of American food items to make and sell at the American booth. We talked about stereotypes as well as what Americans typically eat. I then taught some of my colleagues how to make pancakes for the booth, while the students prepared brownies, cupcakes, bought Coke, and other treats. During the market, students asked questions about the United States and enjoyed American food. After the school Christmas market, my colleagues took me to their favorite Christmas markets in Košice to experience the real thing. It was a day of cultural exchange.
