The Fulbright Program is facing an existential threat: The Administration has submitted a budget that would result in a 47% cut to the Fulbright Program for Fiscal Year 2018. We need your help to Stand for Fulbright.
A 47% cut would devastate the Fulbright Program, forcing the elimination of many grants and damaging our relationships with host countries. The program as you know it, which changed your life and makes the world safer and more peaceful, would be diminished beyond recognition. The Fulbright Program has faced budget cuts from previous administrations of both parties, but has sustained flat funding over the years due to unique bipartisan support and the collective voice of the Fulbright alumni community.
Now more than ever, it is critical that we Stand for Fulbright. You can tell your members of Congress to oppose these cuts and to restore funding of the program to the $250 million level. House and Senate members make the final decision on funding, so it is vital to the future of the Fulbright Program that you make your voice heard. Many members of Congress are already inclined to support Fulbright. The more constituents they hear from, the more likely they are to reject these cuts and advocate among their colleagues for sustained program funding.
We call on you today to take action: sign our petition, write to your Congressional delegation, and call their local and Washington offices.
To maximize our collective impact, we encourage you to join us in taking action by Friday, June 16.
Our advocacy platform includes a sample letter and phone script, and sends your message to your Congressional representatives electronically. The process only takes a few minutes, and has a real impact on the future of the Fulbright Program. We encourage you to use our talking points and to tell your own story — personal experiences are a very powerful way to show your support. If you have connections with Congressional representatives or their staffs, now is the time to contact them directly to voice your concerns. International alumni can input the address for their host institution in the U.S. to sign the petition, and should visit our Advocacy page for more information on ways they can make their voices heard. And there’s more you can do to support Fulbright:
Register for our National Conference. The 40th annual Fulbright Association Conference will take place from November 4–7, 2017, in Washington, D.C. For the first time in its history, the conference will conclude with a Fulbright Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill. Sharing your Fulbright story with Congressional representatives in person has a significant impact.
Join our social media campaign using the hashtag #StandForFulbright. The Fulbright Association will compile posts shared on Facebook and Twitter using #StandForFulbright to showcase the positive impact of the Fulbright Program worldwide.
Contact your college or university’s federal relations office. If you are affiliated with a higher education institution, reach out to your federal relations office to reinforce the impact of Fulbright and other federally-funded international exchange programs on your students, faculty, campus community, and local economy.
In all outreach, messaging, and social media posts, we ask you to focus on your positive and transformational Fulbright experiences, recognizing that the Fulbright Program has thrived thanks to bipartisan support for 70 years. You can be a powerful voice at a crucial moment in the history of American diplomacy. As Fulbrighters, we cannot stand by. We must act. We must Stand for Fulbright.
