Bono, U2 lead singer and cofounder of ONE and (RED), to be awarded the Fulbright Prize for International Understanding

The Fulbright Association will award the 2021 Fulbright Prize for International Understanding to Bono, the lead singer of U2 and the co-founder of ONE and (RED), sister organizations dedicated to the fight against extreme poverty, AIDS and other crises impacting the developing world, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. With this award, the Fulbright Association honors Bono’s commitment to seek justice by fighting to end extreme poverty, tackle global health crises, and spur economic development in the poorest parts of the planet.

The Prize ceremony will be held at the historic Omni Shoreham Hotel, one of the largest hotels in Washington, D.C. The hotel is located in Dupont Circle,  near the Metro, Adams Morgan, National Zoo and more.

The Fulbright Association has arranged special room rates for Prize attendees at the Omni at $259/night (not including 14.95% state and local taxes). Reservation details will be provided in your registration confirmation.

Travel from Airport

Washington, D.C. is serviced be several local airports. The hotel does not provide shuttle service.

Regan National Airport8 miles from venue

Dulles International Airport – 28 miles from venue

  • Taxi Service: Approximately $50 – $65

Baltimore-Washington International Airport – 33 miles from venue

  • Taxi Service: Approximately $75 – $100 (allow 60 minutes of travel time)

Directions from Metro

The hotel is located one block from the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan Metro station. Once you have exited the Metro via the escalators, go to the right and down the stairs. Go to the left and walk to Calvert Street (1 block). Cross the street and take a right. The hotel will be on your left-hand side. Approximately $1.35 – $2.55 per person. https://www.wmata.com/

COVID-19 Event Safety & Responsibility

Your well-being is our #1 priority. The Fulbright Association is committed to providing a safe, productive, and welcoming environment in which guests are expected to abide by all polices in effect for the event. Here is what we are doing to protect your health and peace of mind so you can fully enjoy your time at the Fulbright Prize.

Vaccination Requirement

To promote the safety of all attendees, you must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.”Full vaccination” means that either 14 days have passed since receiving the second dose of FDA or WHO authorized (or emergency use authorized) double-dozed vaccines or single-dose vaccine.

All guests must provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 (electronic or physical copy to be shown upon check-in) and a valid photo ID. A list of approved vaccinations by the World Health Organization (WHO) can be found here.

If you are unable to meet this requirement, we encourage you to register to attend the live-streamed event, which will begin at 6:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time.

Mask Requirement

All participants will be required to wear masks in the venue and during the event. Masks must be worn at all times except while actively eating/drinking, presenting, or outside of the hotel.

We will continue to monitor and update safety precautions and recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the District of Columbia, and the Omni Shoreham hotel.

Venue Procedures

The Omni Hotel is committed to cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting procedures, including recommendations from the CDC and EPA. Read the Omni’s full Safe & Clean Program here.

  • All associates who prepare or handle food will be required to wear gloves and hairnets/hats, and other protective equipment while preparing food or in any food preparation areas
  • Sanitization stations will be available throughout the venue to encourage frequent hand sanitization
  • Each banquet table will be set with 8 chairs (rather than 10) and aisles will be increased, to allow for additional spacing and traffic flow
  • Event  areas are large and spacious with high ceilings, improved ventilation systems, and increased outside air flow

We reserve the right to modify these policies and procedures at any time given the rapidly changing nature of the current global pandemic.
