You’ll see the sights and experience the culture and history through the eyes and voices of Peruvians. During this culturally immersive trip, you’ll enjoy enlightening political and economic discussions, including dinner with the former President of Peru. You’ll engage on social issues with a local nonprofit and learn about Incan and Andean musical instruments from an expert.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Lima
Arrival at Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport
Transfer to the hotel and check‑in, followed by leisure time
Day 2: Lima
Group breakfast & orientation to Peru
Lecture providing a political & economic overview of Peru
Explore Lima, including a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site Plaza de Armas
Visit to the Museum of Inquisition to learn about the effects of the Spanish Inquisition
Meet with a local nonprofit focused on social issues in Peru
Day 3: Lima
Visit the Larco Museum (one of the world’s largest collections of Peruvian pre-Colombian artifacts)
Special Dinner with Dr. Alejandro Toledo, the former President of Peru and a Fulbrighter
Day 4: Yucay
Morning flight to Cusco and transfer to the Sacred Valley
Visit to the Awanakancha Center en route to learn about South American textiles and Camelids
Tour of the Ollantaytambo Ruins (highlighting the engineering genius of the Inca at the site of the Inca’s last stand against the Spanish)
Day 5: Yucay
Morning departure for a full day visit to the Potato Park (guided by a college professor explaining how this agricultural community that revolves around the potato seeks gender equality and food security)
Visit the six Quechua communities residing in the park, visit Kinsaqocha Lake and see handicrafts and medicinal plant workshops
Day 6: Aguas Calientes
Morning departure aboard the Vista Dome train to Machu Picchu, a scenic journey by rail that follows the Urubamba River with spectacular views of the snowcapped Andes
Take a bus up the mountain from Aguas Calientes to explore the iconic Machu Picchu ruins with your guide
Return for an evening in Aguas Calientes
Day 7: Cusco
Morning free to explore the town or Machu Picchu on your own at a relaxed pace
Train ride to Ollantaytambo and bus back to Cusco
Day 8: Cusco
Enjoy a breakfast visit to the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, a wonder of technical achievement and testament of human will
Exploration of Cusco center, including a visit to Koricancha, its colonial churches and Inca ruins
Dinner and presentation by local expert on the history of Incan and Andean musical instruments
Day 9: Lima
Flight from Cusco to Lima
Free afternoon to explore the city
Farewell dinner and transfer back to the airport
COSTS
$4,405.00 + airfare (your airfare to Miami + approximately $1,100 for airfare from Miami to Peru and within Peru)
Based on double occupancy in 4-5 star hotels ($1,025 additional for single accommodations)
