Most people go on safari
when in Africa because of
the wildlife. To me this
was a side benefit to
seeing the stars of the
Southern Hemisphere
under a pristine dark sky.
Although my wife Mary
and I had previously been
to Chile and Australia,
spending not just days
but weeks under a very
different set of stars was
a unique opportunity. We
spent two weeks in the fall
of 2021 in Namibia, driving ourselves around the northern part of the country. We also returned to the Namib Desert for two months in 2022 with me as the resident astronomer for a lodge. This presentation will include some of the photographs I took of the deep sky objects but also of the many animals and the beautiful landscape that make up Namibia.
