The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a clear violation of international law and of the UN Charter. It has also led to enormous loss of life and considerable human suffering. One would thus expect a near unanimous condemnation of it by the international community. Yet that has not been the case. Some of the leading countries in the Global South, like India, South Africa, Brazil , Mexico, Pakistan and Indonesia have remained studiously neutral. Why so? Based on a forthcoming book, entitled Latin American Foreign Policies in the New World Order : The Active Non Alignment Option ( Anthem, forthcoming, January 2023), this talk explores the resurrection of Non Alignment in the Global South, its new incarnation as “Active Non-Alignment”, and what this entails for the future of world politics.
