Dear Fulbrighters,

Join your fellow Minnesota Fulbrighters on Saturday, Oct. 14, for a special presentation on the sacred Indigenous Dakota place “Bdote” and then a guided tour of the U.S. Army’s Fort Snelling in what later became Minnesota. Plan to take Metro Transit’s Blue Line train to the Fort Snelling station and arrive no later than 9:30 a.m.  Reserve your space by noon on Thursday, Sept 28, by submitting a refundable $10 deposit on PayPal here.

The Twin Cities have deep historical significance for the peoples who have lived and worked here, and perhaps no place represents this better than the Minnesota Historical Society site at Historic Fort Snelling. Fulbright MN Chapter has arranged a remarkable double-feature on Oct. 14.  St. Cloud State University Professor Iyekiyapiwiƞ Darlene St. Clair (Bdewakantunwan Dakota) will speak with us about the history and significance of the sacred place, Bdote, located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers. This is also the location of Fort Snelling, where 1,700 Dakota people were imprisoned before their forced removal from their homelands in the 19th century.

At noon we will have an hour-long guided tour of Historic Fort Snelling by a member of the Minnesota Historical Society.  In between the presentations, we can talk over lunch (you can bring your own or buy snacks and drinks there) and check out the visitor center with its wonderful new exhibit: “Many Voices, Many Stories, Once Place.” Afterward, you are welcome to explore the site, inside and outside, on your own.

We are pleased to offer this opportunity to incoming Fulbrighters this fall and invite alumni to join us in welcoming them. The event is limited to the first 30 Fulbrighters who reserve a spot by noon on Thursday, Sept. 28.  Please reserve your refundable $10 tickets on our PayPal site now.  Once registered, you will receive additional information about transportation options and meeting times and places.  For any questions, please contact MN Chapter Board member Kirsten Fischer: kfischer@umn.edu
