Larry Watson was born in Rugby, N.D., grew up in Bismarck, has undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of North Dakota and a doctorate in creative writing from the University of Utah. He taught English for 25 years at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, followed by 15 years at Marquette University as a visiting professor, leaving in 2018 to write full time.
A tight 175 pages, “Montana 1948,” was Watson’s second book, and it won the 1993 Milkweed National Fiction Prize. “Meditative, rich and written close to the bone,” author Louise Erdrich said, “Montana 1948 is a beautiful novel about the meaning of place and evolution of courage. It is a wonderful book.”
“This story makes you turn its pages as fast as your favorite detective novel,” wrote professor David Huddle, a judge for the National Fiction Prize. “But when you finish it, you have received gifts of permanent value – an appreciation of the moral complexity of our history, a refined sense of our weakness and our strength, a profoundly improved understanding of the American character.”
Watson’s most recent novel, “The Lives of Edie Pritchard,” was published this July, but even more recently, an adaptation of his novel, “Let Him Go,” was released as a major motion picture last month, starring Kevin Costner and Diane Lane. It is now playing in theaters and on Prime Video. If you have time, watching (and/or reading) “Let Him Go” would be a great encore to reading “Montana 1948.”
