Good morning, Fulbright alumni!
We might not all be athletic or musical, but two talents that every Fulbrighter has are reading and listening (not to mention eating)! We especially invite you, our Fulbright alumni colleagues, to exercise those talents in our final two events of the fall semester:
Friday night, Nov. 25, we’ll gather at the beautiful Ordway Concert Hall in downtown St. Paul to hear the Grammy-winning Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra play a program featuring American composer Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings.” As soon as you start to hear it, you’ll recognize this dramatic 8-minute symphonic classic, which critics have called, “the saddest music ever written.” But until you hear the SPCO play it live in the acoustically perfect Ordway, you’ve never really heard it — and you’ll never forget the experience.
We have 12 excellent tickets to this Nov. 25 concert, for seats in the first row of the “choir loft,” overlooking each side of the stage, so you’ll be able to see the musicians’ faces as well as hear their instruments. To cap off this unforgettable evening, we’ll head across Rice Square after the concert for an appetizer and discussion of the concert. To secure one of these 12 tickets, you need to register through the MN Chapter’s PayPal site and use your credit card to pay the $12 cost of the ticket – but after you attend the concert, we will refund that $12 to your credit card, so the concert is FREE (except to those who fail to show up for it). Reserve your ticket today, because this is a first-come, first-serve opportunity, and after these first 12 tickets are reserved, we might not be able to get any more, certainly not for these excellent seats. Unlike our family-friendly Thanksgiving Event this Saturday, the Nov. 25 SPCO concert is open only to Fulbright alumni, grantees and dues-paying Friends of Fulbright.

Monday night, Dec. 12, we’ll gather once again for our inaugural “Fulbright Reads” event, featuring a live discussion with Marcie Rendon, the Native American author of “Murder on the Red River,” which is set in northwestern Minnesota. “Fulbright Reads” is an outgrowth of our Fulbright MN Chapter Book Club that we held during the pandemic. Rather than continuing to just hold book discussions on Zoom every month or so, we now plan to have a Fulbright community-wide gathering in person (with a Zoom hybrid option) to socialize, eat together and discuss one book, usually with its author. We will determine the Dec. 12 event’s location (near the Twin Cities light rail) and menu once we know how many of us are registered for this first “Fulbright Reads” discussion. Registration is unlimited, at least initially, but in order for us to know you’re committed to reading the book and coming to the dinner, you must use your credit card to place a separate $10 reservation for Dec. 12 on our PayPal site. As with the SPCO ticket, this $10 will be refunded to your credit card after you attend the Dec. 12 “Fulbright Reads” event. Both of these events are being funded by a generous and competitive grant that the MN Chapter won from the national Fulbright Association office and the U.S. Department of State.
So, please go to PayPal now to reserve your spot with us on Nov. 25 at the SPCO and/or Dec. 12 for “Fulbright Reads”!
P.S. If you are not able to join us in the Twin Cities for “Fulbright Reads” on Dec. 12, but you’d still like to read “Murder on the Red River” and participate in the discussion over Zoom, we will pay for your copy of the book! Just use our PayPal site to make the same $10 reservation as everyone else, and then we will refund that after you show up on Dec. 12 via Zoom.
