Dr. George E. Bogden is a Senior Visiting Researcher at Bard College preparing a monograph on Central and Eastern European security and the 2022 Helmut Schmidt Fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the U.S. He is also currently completing a one-year appointment as a Senior Law Clerk at the U.S. Court of International Trade.

His talk will focus on:

 ·      The role Fulbright played in Dr. Bogden’s educational journey from Punahou to Oxford and the U.S. Court of International Trade and what motivated him to sustain this journey.

·      Why historical research is critical to understanding political challenges and how that research helps us from repeating the same mistakes. Read Dr. Bogden’s 2022 essay for the Wall Street Journal on the present war’s origins in the 1990s.

·      What Dr. Bogden thinks will happen in Ukraine and what he hopes will happen there.

About the speaker:

The 2007 Punahou graduate received a D.Phil. in international relations from the University of Oxford as a Clarendon Scholar, and a JD from New York University. Before defending his dissertation, he undertook a Fulbright Fellowship in Kosovo. He earned his B.A. from Yale.

His research has been funded by the Smith Richardson Foundation, Yale’s Mellon Forum, the Gilbert Murray Trust, St. Edmund Hall, and St. Peter’s College, Oxford, and has earned multiple awards. Dr. Bogden’s commentary has appeared in the GMFUS’s Paper Series, The American Interest, The Wavell Room, Presidential Studies Quarterly, and the Marine Corps University Press. In the fall of 2022, Routledge will publish his chapter in its Handbook on Strategic Culture.
