Detailed itinerary coming soon. Below is a short description of activities and locales to be enjoyed on the trip:
  • Experience life in Gjirokastra, a picturesque city of 40,000 nestled in a river valley in southern Albania, near Greece. Known as the “City of Stone,” it’s a World Heritage Site, with more than 600 Ottoman-era buildings, many in degraded condition. That’s where you come in!
  • Join the restoration efforts, led by Cultural Heritage without Borders’ Regional Restoration Camps, recipient of a 2014 EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Award. Enjoy engaging lectures and hands-on experience in restoration and conservation with assistance from experts in traditional tools and methods. Both your volunteer work and part of the trip fee go toward restoring Gjirokastra’s heritage.
  • Get to know students from across the Balkans who attend the camp and locals who offer lessons in drawing, cooking and Albanian dance. Experience Albanian cuisine and cafe culture in your free time.
  • Experience the beautiful and picturesque lakeside village of Virpazar, in Montenegro and gaze out onto distant snow-capped mountain peaks.
  • Listen to the clang of smiths crafting copper coffee sets and household items in the small workshops in the cobblestone alleys of Bašcaršija, in Sarajevo.
  • Experience the magical old town that feels like you’ve traveled through time.
  • Enjoy a reception and dinner with members of the Bosnian Fulbright Association and alumni of other U.S. exchanges.
