Join the 2019 Fulbright Alumni Service Corps Trip to Greece!

Discover Greece with fellow Fulbrighters and friends by immersing yourself in its history, humanity, academia, and its gastronomy. Walk under the Attican sky in the footsteps of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, in the historic center of Athens, near the “Sacred Rock” of the Acropolis. Visit the excavation of the University of Athens in Marathon and have an amazing experience of the excavation procedures. Volunteer with the “Doctors of the World”, a non-profit organization offering support, care and hope for children and adults in need. Act as an “academic ambassador”, leading discussions with undergraduate students regarding graduate studies at American universities. Discover the ancient Minoan Civilization and the beautiful island of Crete, while learning the benefits of the famous Cretan Mediterranean diet.

Friday, May 17

Arrival to Heraklion, Crete and Transfer to Hotel. Free day
  • Transfer from airport to the eco-friendly hotel in Heraklion
  • We invite you for a night walk around the Heraklion city, the capital of Crete.

Saturday, May 18

Explore Minoan Civilization - Cooking Class and Wine Tasting - Knossos and Heraklion Archeological Museum
  • Explore Knossos, center of the Minoan civilization, and most visited place in Crete, with a Greek archaeologist.
  • Visit a winery and experience cooking Mediterranean diet style.
  • Herakleion Archaeological Museum

Sunday, May 19

Free day in Crete or Visit Eleftherna Museum in Rethimno (optional)
  • This is a free day for you to explore Crete.
  • A trip to the beautiful city of Rethymno with its Venetian harbor and Venetian fortress, and the Eleftherna Museum can be arranged (optional). Note: If you wish to join the tour to Rethymno and the Eleftherna Museum, this will be an additional fee of $85 per person
  • Dinner with local Fulbrighters in Heraklion (optional).

Monday, May 20

Visit the Island of Spinalonga and Institute for Aegean Prehistory Study for East Crete
  • Take a ferry to the island of Spinalonga
  • Enjoy lunch in a traditional taverna
  • Visit INSTAP – Institute for Aegean Prehistory Study for East Crete. We will be welcomed by the Director, Dr. Brogan, a Fulbrighter.

Tuesday, May 21

Travel to Athens – Doctors of the World Volunteer Project-Event with the US Embassy.
  • Flight to Athens in the morning. Transfer to boutique hotel in Athens.
  • Late afternoon, participate in a volunteer project for the Doctors of the World.
  • Meet the US embassy cultural attaché to Greece in an event organized by the US embassy.

Wednesday, May 22

The Athens University’s excavation in Plasi of Marathon
  • Experience the feelings and the passion of an archaeologist in the working excavation of Plasi. The director of the excavation, Dr Yiannis Papadatos, will give an introduction to the history of the area and the details of an archaeological excavation offering the opportunity to access some steps of the excavation process.
  • Enjoy lunch in a seaside restaurant in Marathon.
  • In the evening, enjoy a scenic drive through several classical and neoclassical monuments of Athens, including the Panathenaic Stadium, used during the first modern Olympic Games and serving as a world symbol of athletic competition.

Thursday, May 23

National Technical University of Athens
  • Have the opportunity to communicate the benefits of American universities to motivated Greek undergraduate students who are interested in going abroad for graduate studies.
  • Meet with Greek professors and discuss educational topics. Optional: you can give a lecture to Greek students or fellow Fulbrighters on the topic of your choice (professional development).
  • Free afternoon (optional: visit National Archeological Museum, Doctors of the World volunteer project etc)

Friday, May 24

Kerameikos and Ancient Agora Walking Tour – Meeting with Fulbrighters in Greece.
  • Travel to Kerameikos archaeological site.
  • Visit the Ancient Agora, with a tour offered by the ASCSA (American School of Classical Studies) and the museum in the Stoa of Attalos.
  • Meeting with the local Fulbrighters in Athens. Small lecture by Dr Yiannis Papadatos (director of the excavation in Plasi-Marathon) discussing the “life” of Greek archaeologists.

Saturday, May 25th

Acropolis and Acropolis Museum. Sounio Sunset (optional)
  • Accompanied by a Greek archaeologist, visit the rocky outcrop known as the Acropolis, housing the temple and sanctuary of ancient Athens dedicated to the goddess Athena.
  • Enjoy a tour of the Acropolis Museum and discover the story behind the Acropolis monuments, through various artifacts, sculptures, and architectural elements.
  • A traditional lunch with Greek live music in a place beloved by locals: Klimataria
  • Witness the awe-inspiring sunset at Sounion sipping Greek ouzo, overlooking the cape (optional). Note: If you wish to join the trip to Sounio, it will be an additional fee of $100 per person.
