 Welcome to the Fulbright Association

Announcement:

Dear Members, Friends of Fulbright, Donors, Institutions, and Partners:

An optimistic Happy New Year to all of you as we start this new year.  Thanks to you, the Fulbright Association had a terrific year in 2016, with our best-ever advocacy effort, a wonderful 70th Anniversary Conference, growing strength in our chapters, and a highly dedicated staff, with Mary Ellen Schmider stepping in as interim Executive Director while we conducted a search, and Shaz Akram moving into the role of Deputy Director.

I’m writing today with two announcements.

Dr. John B. Bader

First, we have an important announcement about the leadership of the Fulbright Association.  Our search committee has completed its work and Dr. John B. Bader is our new Executive Director, beginning on January 9, 2017.

Some of you may know John personally, since he has served on our Board in the past and was recognized as a Global Changemaker by the Institute of International Education last fall.

He brings to the Fulbright Association a history of management experience, including staff management and budget development.  After earning a BA at Yale in history and an MA and Ph.D. in political science at the University of Wisconsin, he worked in administrative roles at Johns Hopkins for a decade, including seven years as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs.  While at Hopkins he founded the study abroad program and advocated for the Fulbright Program on Capitol Hill.  In the last two years, he has served as Chief External Academic Relations Officer for International Baccalaureate, a network of 5000 K-12 schools around the globe.

John comes from a family dedicated to the Fulbright Program.  His father was a Fulbright Scholar, worked with Senator Fulbright, and became Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs.  His mother was a portrait artist whose bust of Senator Fulbright is displayed in the National Portrait Gallery and is replicated for our own Fulbright Prize.  John kept up the tradition as a Fulbright Scholar to India.

Mary Ellen has graciously agreed to remain in the Fulbright Association office for a few weeks, to familiarize John with office procedures and current program initiatives, particularly in advocacy.

I hope you’ll join me in welcoming John as he takes on this new role.

Second, our Hill Day will take place on March 15.  We need a strong presence in Washington, DC at this critical time.  Last year almost 50 alumni, staff, Friends of Fulbright and Commission EDs met early in the morning of “Hill Day,” had some quick training, and spread out on the hill in teams of three to carry a clear message to Congressmen, Congresswomen, Senators and their staffs: the need to restore funding for the Fulbright Program to 2010 levels.  With dramatic political changes reverberating on the Hill, this year we need to emphasize, more than ever, the value of the Fulbright Program in improving relationships across the world.   More than 370,000 scholars and researchers have received Fulbright awards, and many of them are leaders in their countries today, inspired by the idea that people from different cultures can live together peacefully and productively.

We look forward to working with you in 2017.

With highest regards,

Nancy Neill, President
Fulbright Association
Washington, DC

Moving forward to 2017: our 40th Year Anniversary

2016 was a busy year, as we celebrated 70 years of the Fulbright Program. Check out our Year in Review video here! Some highlights of the year included: our 39th Annual Conference in Washington, DC and awarding Senator Richard Lugar our Fulbright Prize of International Understanding, our Advocacy Days work in the spring, embarking on a variety of global tours through our Insight and Service Tour programs, and connecting a 60+ chapter network throughout the United States which work to bring Fulbrighters and supporters of Fulbright’s vision together.

We sincerely thank you for your generous donations, which have sustained the Association. We are proud to report that we reached our year-end goal of raising $150,000.
